Men’s Diamond Rings – Would You Give Your Future Hubby A Man-gagement Ring?

For centuries, women have worn engagement rings as a sign that they are…well, engaged. Engagement rings have always been a female item…until two years ago, when the man-gagement ring appeared on the scene. Men’s diamond rings are nothing new, but this is one piece of jewellery that is causing quite a stir.

About two years ago, the largest jeweller in the UK, H. Samuel, unveiled the Tioro. It was a titanium ring with a small diamond in it, and the jeweller promoted it specifically as an engagement ring for men. The trend caught on, and jewellers in the U.S. have been making and promoting their own version of what has now been termed the ‘man-gagement ring’.

Why this trend? One reason could be that the number of same-sex marriages is increasing, and men want to buy rings for each other. Another, though, is an increase in the number of women who are popping the question. And you just can’t pop that question without a ring…can you?

Though the term man-gagement ring seems snide and sarcastic, sort of like ‘man-purse’ or ‘mandal’, the concept makes sense. After all, why should the woman in the relationship be the only one who is noticeably marked for engagement? Aren’t both parties officially off the market when they’re engaged? Also, since engagement rings are a symbol of commitment, isn’t it reasonable that both the man and the woman wear one?

This practice is not uncommon outside of North America. Many countries in Europe, like Sweden, Denmark and Germany, have been making men’s diamond rings as engagement rings for years. In Germany, engagement rings for both men and women are most commonly plain gold bands and used as both engagement and wedding rings.

But some people think this whole trend is nothing more than a money grab. They say the man-gagement ring is a sales tactic, a trick to make young couples spend more money.

Sales tactic or not, a growing number of men and women are catching on to the trend. Jennifer Hudson bought one for her boyfriend David Otunga…to the tune of $15,000. But other man-gagement rings are far less expensive, costing only a few hundred dollars.

Men’s diamond rings are a common sight…so why not men’s engagement rings? After all, the roles of men and women and the idea of marriage has evolved considerably over the last few decades. So why not the jewellery that goes along with it? I wouldn’t be surprised if, in a few years, men and women will be shopping together to pick out their his and hers engagement rings. So what do you think…would you buy a man-gagement ring for your future hubby?
